What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is inflammation of the facial cavities around your nose—those above the eyes (frontal), behind the nose (sphenoids), on either side of the top of the nose (ethmoid), and beneath the eyes in the cheek area (maxillary). They produce mucus, which drains through the ostia (small openings) in your nose. If the sinus cavities get clogged with mucus and the openings are blocked, infection and pain can result.
Sinusitis is a serious problem. You need to visit a qualified ENT surgeon if you have these issues or symptoms. Sinusitis is completely curable. But don’t wait to channel a doctor.
Symptoms of Sinusitis
Frontal sinusitis – pain in the forehead and pain that gets worse when lying on your back.
Ethmoid sinusitis – pain between the eyes, eyelid swelling, loss of smell, and pain when touching the sides of the nose.
Sphenoid sinusitis – earaches, neck pain or headache at the top of the head or deep behind the forehead.
Maxillary sinusitis – pain in the cheeks, under the eyes, or in the upper teeth and jaw.
Simple Steps to Relieve Sinusitis at Home
Keep this in your mind very carefully. This is not a treatment for sinusitis. But your pain can be relieved a bit. I like to tell you about my experience on sinusitis. One of my acquaintance suffered with left maxillary sinusitis. She got so many drugs for years. But no any cure.
She used lot of painkillers, because she often suffered from severe headaches. And she suffered from breathing difficulties, mucus and bad smell when breathing. Finally, she admitted to an ENT clinic in a government hospital. To diagnose her condition accurately, doctors performed several tests. Finally, she got a date for the operation.
After the operation, she is now fully recovered. Now she has no more headaches, breathing difficulties and bad smell when breathing. So, I strongly advise you to see a doctor as soon as possible.
01. Avoid Swimming in a Chlorinated Pool and Never Dive
Chlorine irritates the lining of the nose and sinuses. Diving forces water from nasal passages up into the sinuses. So, limit or stop swimming in chlorinated pools.
02. Use warm water to Wash Your Face
Practice rinsing your face with warm water after waking up in the morning. It will undoubtedly bring you great relief.
03. Do Some Steam Cleaning
Steam can relieve the painful sinus pressure. Take a long, hot shower, inhale the steam, and let the water spray on your face. Then snort and swallow the hot water until your sinuses are clear.
When the water boils you can add eucalyptus oil or Vicks VapoRub to the pot. Then remove the pot from the stove. Drape a towel over your head and shoulders, then lean forward so it forms a tent over the pan. Keep your face about 18 inches above the water as you breathe in deeply. As the vapor rises, it carries droplets of oil into your sinuses and loosens secretions.
04. Saline Solution
Another method of loosening mucus and reducing swelling is irrigating the sinuses with a saline solution. You can also use salt for this one but it very easy buy a saline bottle from a pharmacy. So use saline for this method. You can use a syringe to do this. Closing one nostril with your thumb, tilt your head back and squirt the solution into one nostril while you sniff. Blow your nose gently, then repeat with the other nostril.
05. Avoid Smoking
Smoking cigarettes or marijuana is not a good thing for this health problem. So, if you are a smoker, you have to stop smoking. Also, when you go out, you can use a mask to protect yourself from vehicle exhaust smoke and dust.
06. Avoid Frozen Foods
Sometimes, you may suffer from a runny nose after eating frozen foods. If you are a sinusitis patient, it’s good to avoid frozen foods and some other cold foods like avocado, watermelon, yoghurt.
